Johnny L. Dukes, age 80 of Newnan, passed away at Corinth Road Personal Care Home on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 surrounded by family. He was born on May 27, 1935 to the late Harris Dukes and Myrtie Sprayberry Dukes.
Johnny graduated from Newnan High School in 1953. Upon graduation from highschool he joined the United States Navy where he served as a member of the Attack Squadron Thirty Four. He was honorably discharged in 1957. In 1961 Johnny went to work with the United States Postal Service. He started as a sub-carrier. He was the first letter carrier to wear shorts as part of his uniform in Newnan. He worked his way up through the postal service to become a troubleshooter and later a supervisor. He traveled the United States helping to create the 9 digit zip code that we use today. He retired from the Postal Service in October of 1992. After his retirement from the Postal Service he worked as a driver for Adesa Auto Auction where he worked until he became ill.
His favorite past time was watching his grandchildren play sports and watching the Atlanta Braves play baseball. He loved talking about baseball almost as much as he loved watching it. He always looked forward to Sunday dinners with his family and always enjoyed taking the grandkids to the square in Newnan the day after thanksgiving to watch Santa Clause ride in on the fire truck. These are fond memories that we will always cherish.
Johnny is survived by his two daughters that he loved dearly; Robin (Lee) McGuffey and Leigh Ann (Don, Jr.) Jones and former wife, the mother of his children and best friend Linda Gladney Williams. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Camille Wilbanks, Will Wilbanks, Jessica (Corey) Sherman, and Sydney Jones all of Newnan; sisters, Bobbie Hammock Breed, Sybil Coggin both of Newnan, Gwen Kite of Phenix City, AL; brother Melvin Dukes of AL and many nieces and nephews.
