Rev. Johnnie Marie Swindull Lampkin, 85, of O’Fallon, IL passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2021, at Memorial East Hospital. She was born April 16, 1936, in Mobile, AL. After graduating from Vigor High School in Prichard, AL she attended Millsaps College in Jackson, MS where she met her beloved husband of 57 years. Johnnie started as a Social Worker in Atlanta Georgia while her husband completed seminary.
She continued her education and became one of the first four Methodist women pastors in Mississippi, dedicating her life to the service of the Lord and the nurture and education of multiple churches across the state. In her later years, she and her husband settled in O’Fallon, IL and attended O’Fallon First United Methodist. In the past Johnnie was actively involved in community agencies as well as the church. In the 1970’s she helped establish some of the first Meals on Wheels Programs, she served as past president of the Altrusa Club in Tupelo, MS, she participated in the Red Hat Society in Gulfport, MS and O’Fallon, IL and was known to “tread the boards” on occasion from college well in to her golden years (and loved it).
She was also an avid reader and enjoyed arts and crafts and passed those passions on to her children.Johnnie was preceded in death by her parents; John Lewis and Helen Agnes Swindull (nee Cleveland), and her beloved husband; Rev. Dr. William R. Lampkin (“Dr.Bill”).Johnnie is survived by her three children; Jennifer (Joseph) DeFelice of Vancouver, WA, Eric (Deborah) Lampkin of Caledonia, MS, Julie (Matt Miller) Schwartz of O’Fallon, IL, and four grandchildren; Ellen Marie Self, Camilla, Andrew and Thomas Schwartz.
