Johnie D. Masters, 86, died peacefully at his home in Anderson, IN, on March 10, 2021, due to complications from ALS and COPD. Johnie was born September 8, 1934, in Davidson, TN, a company-owned coal mining town in eastern Tennessee, to John B. and Rose (Maxwell) Masters.

The family moved to Indiana, in 1943, and Johnie attended school in Anderson, IN until his senior year of high school. He finished high school, in 1954, at North Webster High School in North Webster, IN.

After high school, Johnie joined the Navy and served four years of active duty with Naval Air. During his service, he made two cruises, aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown, to the far east, making port in Okinawa, Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, and Korea. He was honorably discharged from active duty with the Fighter Squadron VF-124 at Moffett Federal Air Field, CA. He also served four years of inactive duty.

Johnie retired from the Delco Remy Division of General Motors after 32 plus years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 408 in Chesterfield, IN, and the Freemasons Lodge #271 in Middletown, IN.

Johnie loved spending time with his family, playing card games, and bantering with his grandsons. He loved being outdoors in the sun working in his garden and yard.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Connie (Dant) Masters; son, Jay (Zo) Masters of Harmony, MN; three grandsons, Jacob (Alexandrea) Masters, of Harmony, MN, Zachary (Kristine) Masters, of Rochester, MN, and Logan Masters of Nashville, TN. He has one great-grandson, Jett Masters, of Harmony, MN.

Johnie was preceded in death by his son, Jeff Masters; his parents; his brother, Jim Masters; and two sisters, Geanette Kindred and Geneva “Cathy” Needler.

Johnie’s family wishes to express a special thank you to the wonderful staff of Heart to Heart Hospice and the VA and its ALS clinic, in Indianapolis, for their exceptional care and support throughout Johnie’s illness.
