John Woods Tanner
1928-2016
John Woods Tanner passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on September 16, 2016. He was born December 3, 1928 to Nathan Russel and Dorothy Woods Tanner, the third of 7 children. He attended Ogden High School and later graduated from Utah State University. He served a mission for the LDS Church to the Eastern States. He married his sweetheart Anita Galbraith on February 8, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple and together they were blessed with 6 wonderful children, Jon, JoAn, Mark, Lisa, Scott and Trudi.
After his family, John’s greatest love was flying. John worked as an aircraft mechanic at Hill Air Force Base while attending Utah State. He joined the Air Force Reserve and graduated as a 2nd Lt before completing pilot training in Arizona. John went on to serve for 30 years with the USAF Reserve. In that time he logged over 10, 000 flight hours and logged time in at least 27 different military aircraft. When he wasn’t flying, John owned his own construction company. He loved adventure and traveled all over the world. His favorite quote was “The second greatest thrill in the world is flying, the first is landing”. Here’s to the next great adventure, happy landing!
He was preceded in death by his lovely wife after 57 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents and siblings, James, Marjory and Dorothy as well as his Son in Law William Sparks. He is survived by his brothers Nathan, Steven and David as well as his children Jon (Peggy) Tanner, JoAn (Phil) Green, Mark (Mia) Tanner, Lisa Sparks, Scott Tanner, and Trudi (Mickey) Madison. He leaves behind a great posterity of 20 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
