John William Smith, 90, of Westminster, died Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at Carroll Hospital.  Born in Baltimore on May 22, 1926, he was the son of the late John Matthew Smith and Hazel Mae Smith. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret Isabell Hobbs Smith.

John was a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and had served for 2 years with the U.S. Army 80th Division during WWII as a Combat Infantryman, attaining the Rank of Sargent.  He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve.

Before retiring, he worked for C & P Telephone Company and then retired from Verizon in 1982. He is a member of Telephone Pioneers of America, VFW Molleville Farm Post, American Legion Carroll Post No. 31 and Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge No. 46 AF & AM. He was a great husband, father and friend. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, feeding the birds, fishing and going to the ocean.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters Cheryl Heyman and husband Myer, Susanne Bohrer and husband Shannon, son John Smith and wife Patty and daughter Jo Ann Bostian and husband Rodney. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
