John William Schneider Sr., 78, of Troy, IL, born June 14, 1943 in Erin, TN peacefully passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Memorial Hospital West, Belleville, IL.
John was a member of First Baptist Church Maryville since 1991. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 525 and drove over the road and local delivery until his retirement in 1993.
John was an avid sports enthusiast & played fast pitch until he was forced to retire due to a back injury at 60. Though he played most every position in fast pitch, his favorite was as pitcher. He was well known & highly respected in the surrounding ball community for his fierce competitiveness & athleticism both as a coach & as a teammate.
John also coached his son in his younger years until he reached high school. They would later go on to play together on fast pitch teams for many years. When he couldn’t be found on a mound, he was on a basketball court. He played on many church leagues throughout the years. Every Saturday was faithfully spent at the Lincoln Athletic Center in Granite City, IL playing basketball for hours on end.
He was very well known at the center by many players in the area. And, of course, religiously watched the St. Louis Cardinals on tv or at Busch Stadium. Most of all, he was a devout Christian & loved his family dearly. He never missed a game of his son’s or a performance of his daughter’s. The time he was able to spend with them was most dear to his heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius A. and Ethel D. (nee Barker) Schneider of St. Jacob, IL.
Surviving are his wife, Marcelene “Marce” (nee Martin) Schneider of 58 years whom he married August 30,1963 at St. John United Church of Christ, Granite City, IL; his children, April D. (Willi) Schneider Kindler of Cary, IL and John William (Jill) Schneider Jr. of Edwardsville, IL; his three grandchildren, Paityn Kennedy Schneider, Camdyn Chase Schneider and Olivia Grace Margaret Kindler; his very special friends of 50 years, Jerry and Bonnie Zink of Highland, IL; 1 niece, 3 nephews & many cousins in Granite City, IL; Jerseyville, IL & San Jose, CA.
