John Walter Cook, of Union Point, GA, died Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital. A lifelong resident of Union Point, he was born April 15, 1924 to the late Alvie and Corrine Abbott Cook. He grew up working on the family farm and attended school at Union Point High School.  During World War II, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946.  He served on the John W. Powell cargo ship and on the Navy Gun Crew aboard a Merchant Marine Ship in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters.  On July 17, 1949 he married the former Eloise Johnson from Warrenton, GA.  After the war he worked at Union Manufacturing as a fixer for forty-one years retiring in 1988.  Once he retired he enjoyed working on his farm raising cows.  He was also an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan.

Mr. Cook is survived by a sister, Betty Cook Smith of Cumming, GA; two nephews, David Smith of Cumming, GA and Steve Smith of Atlanta, GA; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Eloise Cook; sister Rebecca Ivie and nephew, Tony Ivie.
