Dr. John Ceilley, age 48, died on September 25, 2022, in Frisco, Colorado, one of his favorite places.
John was born in Iowa City, IA, and moved with his family to West Des Moines, IA. There he graduated with honors from Valley High School and excelled in swimming where he participated at the State Tournament level on four occasions.
After high school John attended The University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1996 with the distinctions of Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Kum Laude.
Pursuing the profession of medicine, John attended The University of Iowa (Iowa City) and graduated from the School of Medicine in 1999 with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. In pursuit of his calling to help an underserved community and understaffed profession, John completed residencies in Psychiatry in 2004 and Geriatric Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine in 2005, both from the University of Pittsburgh.
For 15 years John served the community of Denver, CO, and surrounding areas, working both in the Denver Health County Hospital as well as regional clinics. Most recently John was also working in the jail and emergency room caring for the poor, disadvantaged, difficult, and violent cases. He never complained about any of his patients or cases, only about the inadequate mental health care available to the neediest.
His family, friends, and colleagues all agree that John was one of the smartest, kindest, and most gentle persons they had ever known. He was so engaged and good at helping others but never wanted to ask anyone for anything for himself.
John loved his family and was a doting uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was very fond of all animals and in recent years helped rescue an abused and deaf Doberman Pincer (Baden) and helped nourish her back to health with love and affection.
John is survived by his mother Katherine Ceilley, father Dr. Roger Ceilley (Kimberly), sister Dr. Elizabeth Ceilley (Mark Hansen), brother Michael Ceilley (Lindsay), and companion Eric Theoret.
