John W. Hugel Sr. died July 11, 2011 in Alameda at the age of 87. A native of California, John was born and raised in Berkeley where he attended high school before joining the Army in 1943. He served in the Pacific Theater and was awarded a Bronze Star for his actions during the Bismarck Archipelago Campaign. John was in the lumber business where he worked for 44 years before retiring in 1989. He is survived by his two sons, John and Tom, Tom’s wife Laura, his grandson Greg with his wife Julie, and their daughter; his great-granddaughter Danielle.
