John Sidney Pounds passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2017 in Boerne, Texas at the age of 85. John was born to Sidney Pounds and Marion Blackwell Pounds on May 25, 1932 in LaPorte, Indiana.
When John was eight years old, his family moved to Southern California. He graduated from Verdugo Hills High School in Tujunga, California, where he played football and sang in the choir. His children can still sing the words to a musical in which he had the lead. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After basic training in San Antonio, Texas, he was stationed in England for three years with the 59th Medical Group. He had a lifelong love for England. John worked in the medical field doing private duty nursing, as a nurse tech at the Motion Picture Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, as an orthopedic tech, a nurse tech in the heart catheter lab of Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks, and emergency rooms at Conejo Valley Hospital and Westlake Village. He was respected and well-liked by patients and co-workers for his genuine interest and warm friendliness. Everywhere he went, whether it was on a beach in Mexico, a hiking trail in Sequoia National Park, or the Music Center in Los Angeles, he would be greeted with smiles and hugs by people he knew or had helped. He loved to tell stories, sing, read, travel, and fish. He was a kind man with a strong sense of ethics and a deep Christian faith. His children and grandchildren all have funny stories and wonderful memories of him. He was very much loved and is deeply missed.
John is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Bette Hangartner Pounds; three children: Kathy Miller (James), Mike Pounds (Lynn), and Kevin Pounds (Lori); five grandsons, Sean Pounds, Ryan and Brandon Lepold, and John and Joshua Pounds; and four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Hallie, Lily, and Sage Pounds. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Ruth Pasich, his brother George Robertson, and his grandson Tyler Pounds.
