John Sherman, Jr. was born on April 8, 1933, in Akron, Colorado to his parents, John Sherman, Sr. and Lillie Mae Baldwin Sherman. He was the eleventh child born in the family. He was raised surrounded by the love of his brothers, Cleon, Robert, James, George, Stephen, Eugene, Charles, Edward, and his sisters, Lillie Mae, Carrie, Odessa, and Laura Annie. They shared many happy and precious moments together.
John received his formal education in Denver, Colorado, where he graduated from high school. On February 28, 1953, John enlisted in the United States Air Force.
John united in holy matrimony to Shirley Sherman in his early years. There were no children born to this union and the marriage was later dissolved. He later married, Martha Hoffman in Denver. They enjoyed fishing, camping, partying, and just having fun together. To this union, a son, John, III was born.
By profession, John was employed with the City and County of Denver for many years. He was hard-working, dedicated, and performed his duties with a spirit of excellence.
A man of faith and belief in the Lord, John was a member of Miracle Mountain A.M.E.
John was a fun-loving man, who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed singing. Many have said, he sounded like Nat King Cole. He enjoyed the quality time shared with family and friends. He loved fishing, fishing, and more fishing. In his early years, he would spend time at the dog tracks. His closest friends, John –“Juan” Naranjo, Roscoe Crawford, Jr., and David Vargas, will miss the comraderies they shared together and the fact that he was a true and trusted friend. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man, who had a big heart, and was quite the ladies’ man. When asked by his niece, Joann and many others, “how are you doing Uncle J?” his reply was always, “I’m Fine as Frogs Hair.” To know John was to love him.
He is preceded in death by his son, John Sherman, III; his parents, John Sr, and Lillie M. Sherman; eight brothers; and one sister.
John Sherman, Jr. departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on June 15, 2021, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include his devoted niece, Joann Starks of Denver, Colorado; 2 sisters, Lillie M. (James) Bracken of Denver, Colorado, and Carrie O. (Burrell) Mitchell of Aurora, Colorado; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
