John S. “Sonny” Weaver, 61, of Elkhart, died at 12:05 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 18, 2008) in his home after a battle with cancer. He was born March 18, 1947, in South Bend to Edwin M. and Mary M. (Bennett) Weaver. On Dec. 31, 1985, he married Dorothy L. Meredith in Elkhart.
She survives along with one son, John “J.J.” Weaver of South Bend; three daughters, Chrissy Weaver of Mishawaka, Tanya Bone of Gladston, Ala., and Christine Barr of Plymouth; three stepdaughters, Geraldine Mann of California, Brenda Peffley-Benefiel of Elkhart and Nancy Burgin of Winston-Salem, N.C.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Mabel Challburg of Osceola; two brothers, Charles Weaver of Elkhart and Edwin (Sue) Weaver of Lafayette; and two half-sisters, Sharon Hitzfield of Jefferson City, Mo., and Rosetta Troutman of West Point, Pa.
Mr. Weaver worked as a material handler and group leader for 13 years at Steel Suppliers Inc. He had worked as a welder at Dexter Wheel & Rim.
Mr. Weaver was an avid euchre player at the VFW Post and Bristol American Legion, and a member of the Sons of the American Legion 143, Bristol. He enjoyed fishing and turkey shoots.
