He was born on March 25, 1949 in Star City, to John F. Hettinger and Wilma Jean Moss Hettinger.

He was married to Linda Wilson Hettinger for six years, and they were together 27 years.

He was a high school graduate through the Marine Corps. John served his country in Viet Nam for 3-A½ years, receiving the Purple Heart and Silver Star. John worked for Chrysler in Indianapolis for 6 years and at Carlisle Industrial Brake and Friction for twenty years, before his battle with cancer. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved watching NASCAR racing and he was a Colts fan.

Surviving are his wife, Linda, Georgetown; 1 Daughter: Pamela Suzanne Babers and her husband, Alex II, Friendswood, Texas; 1 Son: Jeffrey Paul Hettinger, Slidell, Louisiana; 3 Granddaughters: Kayla Brooke McClory, Jessica Renee McClory, and Alexis Louise Babers, all of Friendswood, Texas; 1 Grandson: Alex Lewis Babers III, Friendswood, Texas; 2 Sisters: Linda Downs and her daughter Tammy Downs, and Joy Hamilton, all of Logansport 5 Half-Brothers: Jay Downs and his wife, Janiene; Terry Downs, and Kent Downs, all of Logansport; Bill Downs, San Diego, California; and Kevin Downs; 1 Step-Sister: Debby Birnell, and her husband, Albert, Logansport; 1 Step-Brother: John E. Hettinger, Logansport; Step-Mother: Evelyn Hettinger, Logansport; At age 14, he acquired what he called Sisters, Bonnie Long and her husband, Larry, and Pam Wilson and her husband, Jack, all of Florida. John had 3 Brothers-in-law: Richard Elburn and his wife, Joyce and their son Brian David, all of Abilene, Kansas; Jack Elburn, Lafayette; and Kelly Elburn and his wife, Brenda, and Andrew and Dillin Elburn (two special nephews), all of Royal Center. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He had one special friend, Charlie Stapleton, and his wife, Sue and family, Sheridan.

Preceded in death was his mother, father, and Virginia Shoemaker, who he called mom. Also preceding were uncles: Bob Moss, Roy Moss, and Wayne Moss; Grandparents: Rodney and Ruth Moss.
