John Franzis Powrzanas, age 85, of Birmingham, passed away at home on November 11, 2012. He was born on January 6, 1927 in Ensley AL to Harry and Lovie Powrzanas. A veteran of 31 years, he retired as Master Sergeant in 1973. After retiring from the service he was employed at the Veteran’s Hospital in Birmingham, AL for 14 years. He was also an avid member of the Birmingham VFW for many years. John served during World War II, the Korean War for which he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medals. During the Vietnam War 2 tours were served. In his 31 years of service he was awarded various medals, awards and commendations, too many to mention. John was a devoted and loving husband, father, PaPou and brother. He enjoyed watching Alabama Football, gardening, the VFW and time spent with family. He was looked up to by many and to his children, nephews, nieces and grandchildren he was their “hero”. He will be missed greatly by those who loved and knew him. He is preceded in death by his wife Maria of 58 years, mother Lovie, father Harry, and sister Helen Allen. He is survived by his daughter Rose Marie Shaffer, son Harry Powrzanas, grandchildren Christina Maria Bush, James Wheeler Hicks III, Maria Powrzanas, Samantha Marshall, Nicolas Marshall, great grandchild John Alexander Polk, brothers Milta Powrzanas and Tom Powrzanas both of Jasper AL, sisters Marie Broughton of Conroe TX, Sandra Long of Poteau OK.
