John Phillip Arco, 91, died suddenly on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division; he left this world peacefully with his son and daughter-in-law by his side.

John was born on June 6, 1925, in Clarksburg, son of Salvatore and Agnes Levato Arco, of blessed memory. He lived in Shinnston for most of his life and graduated from Shinnston High School where he participated in the band. He was employed with his father in the family store and he worked in the coal mines. He also served as a purchasing agent for Commercial Hydraulics from which he retired.

John was proud of his Italian Heritage and loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing cards, telling and embellishing stories and loved his afternoon iced coffee (long before it became a commercial hit). He enjoyed good food and watching movies, especially old westerns, and keeping up with the current news of the day.

John was a devout Catholic and was a lifetime member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Shinnston. Following his move to Charleston two and a half years ago, he faithfully watched the early daily mass from his favorite armchair.

It is difficult to express in words what John meant to so many people, both family and friends. He was a kind, gentle, and patient man who was easy to love.

John was preceded in death by his very young daughter, Agnes Rose; four sisters, Mary Arco Guarascio, Connie Arco, Rose Arco Tate, Kathy Arco Pulice; and one brother, Samuel “junior” Arco.

John is survived by the love of his life, Mary Guarascio Arco; his beloved son, Samuel Anthony Arco and wife Christina Belcastro Arco; one granddaughter, Andrea Nicole Arco-Mastromichalis and her husband Michael Mastromichalis; one grandson, Lee John Arco and his wife Elizabeth Gray Arco; three great grandchildren, Max Arco Mastromichalis, Mason Arco Mastromichalis, and Cecilia Gray Arco. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and other family members who were so important in his life.

John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather; he was so proud of his family.
