John Paul Wagner, 84 of Cylinder died Tuesday September 21, at the West Bend Care Center. Survivors include his wife Shirley of Cylinder, IA, and his children: Vonnie Struecker of Algona, IA, Rodney (Mary) Wagner of West Bend, IA and Kerry (Sherrie) Wagner of Whittemore, IA. John Paul Wagner Jr., son of John P. and Emma (Krischel) Wagner, was born January 9, 1926 on a farm near Mallard, Iowa. He received his early education at country school in the area, then later attended the St. Mary’s Catholic School in Mallard. He moved with his family to a farm near West Bend, Iowa in 1944. Paul served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. He was assigned to Ladd AFB in Anchorage, Alaska. Paul was united in marriage with Shirley Traub July 21, 1956 at Sts. Peter & Paul’s Catholic Church in West Bend. Together they made their home on a farm near West Bend where they raised their four children. Paul farmed, raised livestock, did custom corn shelling and operated a trucking business which was leased to Warren Transport in Waterloo, IA. While trucking in 48 states and Canada Paul received 22 safe driving awards. Paul and Shirley moved to a farm near Cylinder, IA in 1993 and in 1995 Paul retired. Paul was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul’s Catholic Church in West Bend, Knights of Columbus, receiving Honorary Life Membership in 2004, West Bend American Legion Post 151 for 57 years. Paul enjoyed raising livestock, family get-together, going to casinos and trucking.  Paul died September 21, 2010 at the West Bend Care Center in West Bend. Survivors include Paul’s wife Shirley of Cylinder, IA, daughter Vonnie Struecker of Algona, IA and her special friend Carl Dicks, son Rodney Wagner and his wife Mary of West Bend, son Kerry Wagner and his wife Sherrie of Whittemore, IA, grandchildren: Matthew (Cathy) Struecker of Knoxville, IA, Travis Struecker and his fiance Molly of Chandler, AZ, Angela (Dennis) Scavnicar of Lisle, IL, Raelynn Wagner of Iowa City, IA, Rebecca Wagner of West Des Moines, IA, Alexandra Wagner of Emmetsburg, IA and Kody Wagner of Emmetsburg, IA, great grandson Dylan Scavnicar, step grandchildren Thomas Fisher of Shanghai, China and Michael Fisher of Cedar Rapids, IA, and sisters Bernice Rohovit of Iowa City, IA and Maxine McGary of Russell, KS. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ida Berte and son Kevin Wagner.
