John Patrick Reed, Sr., 69, of 1077 W. Main St., Galesburg, died Thursday, August 7, 2008 at University Hospital, Iowa City, IA.
He was born on March 14, 1939 in Galesburg, the son of Dell M. and Blanche Amenhauser Reed. He married Judy Reed on August 8, 1959 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on July 27, 2007. Surviving him are Debbie (Greg) Smith of Galesburg, three sons, Pat, Jr of Galesburg, Mark (Charla), and Stephen, all of Galesburg, and daughter Kathy (Tim) of Stillwater, MN; 5 grandchildren, Sarah Nelson (and Richard), Amanda Smith, J.P.(Shera) Reed III, Madison and Megan Reed; two great grandchildren, Taylor Leonard and John Reed IV;2 brothers in law, Jim (Barb) Larson of Plano, TX and Robert McKillip of Galesburg; and 2 sisters in law, Joan (Jim) St. Laurent of Los Altos, CA and Kathy Larson of Galesburg. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Mike; 2 sisters, Jean and Mary Ann; and a brother in law, Jerry Larson.
He was a conductor for Burlington Northern Santa Fe for 43 years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the U.T.U., Ralph M. Noble American Legion and it honor guard. He helped establish the Galesburg and Mendota Railroad Museums. He served in the United States Army. He was a member of Father J.O. Hunt Knights of Columbus council 556, 3rd degree. He loved to golf and enjoyed model trains. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
