Surrounded by his loving family, John Patrick Falvey, 84, died peacefully at home in Bethesda, MD on February 9, 2017.

He was born on August 26, 1932 in Staten Island, NY to Cornelius and Kathleen Falvey.  He grew up in Delhi, New York and Staten Island, and graduated from Tottenville high school.  He went to college at St. Peter’s in Jersey City, NJ, graduating cum laude in 1954.  He continued his education doing graduate work in mathematics at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

He moved to Washington DC in 1956, to work as a mathematician at the Naval Research Laboratory.  Later, he spent 30 years as a computer scientist and mathematician for Communications Satellite Corporation.  Gifted at math, many profess that it was his calculations that kept satellites in their orbits.  He also spent 25 years as a devoted federal employee working as a software engineer at several federal agencies, most recently the Federal Communications Commission.  When he retired from the FCC in 2012 at age 80, he still occasionally biked to and from work, a round-trip of over 20 miles.

His hobbies included gardening and bicycling, and he cut his own grass and regularly went on long bike rides until he was 83.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary (maiden name Coakley); his son John Patrick (“Sean”) Falvey, Jr. of Bethesda, his wife Cheryl, and their two children, Jack and Kelly; his son Cornelius Joseph (“Con”) Falvey of Denver, CO, his wife Jackie, and their two children, Megan and Matthew.  He is also survived by his brother, Neil of Boca Raton, Fla.  He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Joan.
