John Nicholas Berte, age 81, of Livermore, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.

John was born in Irvington, Iowa on October 7, 1932 to Nicholas and Josephine (Dentzer) Berte. He attended elementary and high school in St. Joseph, IA and graduated in 1951. John enlisted in the Army on August 18, 1953 and was discharged on June 15, 1955. John was united in marriage to Janine Baker on June 11, 1957. The couple farmed and worked construction in the area after marriage and raised seven children.

John was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Otto-Field American Legion Post #415 of Livermore. He served on Twin Rivers School Board for 9 years. John loved spending time with his family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved reading and spending time on his patio swing visiting.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janine; his seven children, Jan (Bruce) Bratland of Livermore, Jeff (Karen) Berte of Humboldt, Julie (Brad) Banwart of West Bend, Jerry (Kalene) Berte of Humboldt, Jim (Janet) Berte of Bode, Jean (Jon) Jensen of Estherville and Joan (Tim) Bunda of Emmetsburg; nineteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; brothers, Nicholas (Nancy) Berte of Algona and Edmund (Mary Ann) Berte of Algona; sisters, Margaret Laubenthal and Delores (Richard) Arndorfer of Bancroft; and many other numerous family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, August, Adam, Alfred and Charles Berte; a brother-in-law, Louis Laubenthal; and sister-in-laws, JoAnn, Eleanor and Dorothy Berte.
