John was born in Casper, Wyoming on May 17th, 1936. His parents, Jean and Anna Moyer, moved to Lincoln, Nebraska when John was a toddler. He graduated from Lincoln High School, where he met his future wife, Joyle Wiederspan. They were married in 1958 in Lincoln. John graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta social fraternity, Pi Tau Sigma, Sigma Tau, and Sigma Xi honorary fraternities. He planned to be an Air Force pilot and completed the four year ROTC program at Nebraska where he held the position of Deputy Wing Commander, but due to poor eyesight had to resign from the program. John and Joyle moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1960. John went directly from college to work at Sandia National Labs where he spent 39 years there working in a variety of engineering positions, including nuclear weapon security, weapon testing, and high-altitude rocket systems. He held one patent and was the project engineer on designing, developing and testing bombs along with designing the bomb proper for aircraft transportation.
In Albuquerque, John and Joyle raised a son and daughter. In the early years of marriage, John built and refurbished household furniture, and also was the resident auto mechanic. He coached Little League baseball for years while his son was playing and enjoyed back-packing and fishing. He excelled at finding fish-less spots in streams and lakes.
After retiring from Sandia in 1998, John took up golf and consistently played for most of the rest of his life.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyle Moyer of 63 years; and son, Curt Moyer. He is survived by his daughter, Cori (Steve) Pruitt; his two brothers, Ed (Mary) Moyer and Bob Moyer; and his four grandchildren.
