John Miller, Jr. was the second of four children born to the late John Miller, Sr. and the late JimElla Miller.
John joined the Navy in August, 1959 at 17 after graduating from St. Theresa Catholic School in Detroit, MI. After boot camp, he was assigned to VA 44 NAS Jacksonville as a Non-Designated Airman and later, after transferring to Key West, FL qualifying as a Plane Captain on the F9F to become a Non-Commissioned Officer. In 1963, he made Aviation Machine Mate 3rd Class (AD3), also known as a Jet Propulsion Specialist.
After attending “B” School in 1963, and transferring to San Diego, CA to work with the Underwater Demolition Team (UDT-12), (known as the Navy Seals), he was deployed with them during 2 tours in Vietnam.
Over the next 11 years, he advanced from E-4 to E-7 assuming many assignments, including the Command Management Equal Opportunity program (CMEO), NAS Miramar and Minority Affairs Representative. After completing the Department of Defense Equal Opportunity School-Defense Race Relations Institute at Patrick AFB, FL, John became the Race Relations Education Specialist at Miramar and helped facilitate many changes regarding race relations.
In 1992, John worked at the FAA Center for Management Development (CMD) in Palm Coast, FL. Known as the “Premier Facilitator”, he specialized in trainings focused on Competency Based Management Skills, Diversity, Race Relations, Stress Management and Drug and Alcohol Awareness.
His race relations commitment extended to several of the largest California real estate companies where he volunteered to help educate them in race relations, as well.
John was family oriented, private, charitable, and a supportive “best friend” to many. He loved to travel, sing and entertain. He was married to Myralyn Stewart from May 18, 1996 until his passing on March 27, 2020. John was loved and respected by all who knew him and he will be truly missed.
John was preceded in death by his mother, JimElla; father, John Sr.; and sisters, Margaret Rose and Joyce Marie.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories his devoted wife, Myralyn Miller; sister, Beverly Miller; children, Lisa Miller Bethea (Dedrick) and Lori Teate, from his marriage to Albertha Miller; Latrice White and her mother, Tommy Miller, previous wife; grandchildren, Talyah Teate, Lyric White and Jordan White; numerous nieces and nephews as well as a host of cousins and friends.
