John Michael Carrel, who served as Captain of the United States Army and Lieutenant of Miami Dade Police Department passed away unexpectedly at his home in Melbourne, Florida early morning January 2, 2018.
Mike was born on June 18, 1946 in Indianapolis, Indiana and raised in South Florida. He graduated from North Miami Senior High and Miami Dade Community College, where he swam competitively. In 1969, Mike was commissioned as an officer into the United States Army after completing ROTC and graduting from the University of Florida in Gainesville. From there, he served in Panama and VietNam before being stationed in Berlin, Germany to patrol Checkpoint Charlie at the Berlin wall.
In Berlin, he met Nancy Loyd, a teacher with the Department of Defense.
They were married there in 1973 and have been together ever since.
After moving back to the states, Mike started at the Miami Dade Police Department. He was assigned to Northside, Transit, Northeast and Central Districts, where he was honored to work with many brave men and women.
Mike and Nancy moved to Broward County, Florida to raise their two children. Mike was proud to see his son and daughter graduate from the University of Florida.
Some of the greatest moments of his life came from the wedding of his children to their spouses, and the births of his four grandsons, He never failed to describe in great detail their accomplishments to anyone he encountered on a daily basis.
Mike is survived by his brother, four sisters and many beloved nieces and nephews throughout the country.
His generosity and gratitude was well known. The painful space he left in our lives will be felt for a long time to come.
The family will have a private ceremony.
