John Mahlon Tompkins, 81, of Edwards, Mississippi, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, Mississippi.

John was born on May 18, 1941, to the late Earl Tompkins, Sr. and Ailene Puckett Tompkins in Learned, Mississippi. He graduated from Utica High School in 1959 and continued his education at Hinds Jr. College on a football scholarship. After a semester at Hinds, John joined the Army Signal Corps and served for three years in Germany. After his discharge, he returned to Hinds Jr. College where he met his wife, Ann, and they married on July 26, 1966. John continued his studies at Mississippi College and completed with a master’s degree in Counseling.

John was community minded. He served on the Board of Directors of the Culkin Water District and on the Board of Directors for the Halfway House. In 1991, John was on the committee to establish the Warren County Children’s Shelter. He served as “A” Club President at St. Aloysius High School and loved coaching Little League baseball.

During his lifetime, John was an avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast. He was a dedicated fan of MSU and the New York Yankees. He also had a love of music and couldn’t imagine a life without it.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Earl Tompkins, Jr., Robert N. Tompkins, and Cecil A. Tompkins; sisters, Joyce Barnett and Emma Sue McNair; and son, Michael Lance Tompkins. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann; son, Shane Tompkins (Julie); daughter, Jennifer Normand (David); sister, Dean Brantley; and grandsons, Mahlon Tompkins (Sabrina), Jacob Tompkins, Nathan Tompkins, John Pryse Tompkins and Jack Tompkins; and daughter in law, Mitzi Tompkins.
