John M. Hall, 84, of rural Jacksonville, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 30, 1929, the son of John H. and Emma A. Short Hall. He first married Naomi Hodgson in 1950, and there were two children born to this marriage. They later divorced. He later married Lucretia “Spanky” Shirley Stevens on May 31, 1969, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 2001.
He is survived by his companion, Mary Suarez; two sons and three daughters, John L. (Krista) Hall of Murrayville, Michael R. Hall of Brownsville, TX, Judith G. (Jim) Scarber of Buffalo, MO, Patricia (Dan) Daugherty of New Berlin and Lori L. Harbison of Jacksonville; 32 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Darlene (Chuck) Polson of New Braunfels, TX; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela D. Chamberlain; a granddaughter, Brie Janette Hall; and four brothers and two sisters, George Hall (surviving wife Alberta of Mattoon), Anna M. Parkin, James C. Everett, and Maurice, Calvin and Ione, all in infancy.
Mr. Hall was known as the “Monkey Man” and the “Candy Man”. He and his late wife owned Jo-Lu’s Pet Shop for many years. He retired from the State of Illinois as a painter at the Jacksonville State Hospital. He enjoyed painting, woodworking, fishing, camping, and being around friends.
He was a person who would always try to help someone in need. John served as National President of the Simian Society of America for 5 years, and was President of SSA Chapter 28 for 22 years. He was also a member of the Moose, Elks, Family Campers, and a former member of Prairieland Heritage Museum and Jacksonville Good Time Cruisers. He was a collector of primitive items and had several antique tractors and old cars.
