John Lewis Hammett, 73, passed away Thursday, August 5, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born November 4, 1947 in Newnan, GA to Leon and Sarah Hammett. He graduated from Newnan High School and then went on to serve in the United States Air Force where he met his wife, Christena in Orlando, FL. They were married after he completed his service in the Air Force and then made their home in Newnan, GA. He worked for Ryland Homes for many years and then worked as a printer for Continuous Forms & Checks until he retired in 2014. He was devoted to his family and most of all he was devoted to his Savior Jesus Christ. He was a member of White Oak First Baptist Church founded by his brother Buddy Hammett and he was instrumental in the construction of the church from the ground up in 1975-76. His passion was teaching Sunday School which he did up until a few weeks before his passing. He was an avid hunter and loved spending time with his hunting dog Hooch and the many family and friends that he had the opportunity to hunt with. He also loved to fish. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Christena Hammett; his daughter Nickie Cauthen and her husband Bart; his grandchildren Bailey and Eli Cauthen; his sisters Sybil Brown, Frances Coggin, and Juanita (Ronny) Stephens; his brother Larry Hammett and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
