RIVERTON –CIVIC LEADEREASTMAN – John Leslie Eastman, 91, passed away Monday, May 19, 2008 at Hartford Hospital after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Lina Florio Eastman for 69 years. Born in Winsted on November 27, 1916, he was the son of the late Leslie H. Eastman and Amelia (Moore) Eastman. He was a descendent of Apollos Moore, one of Riverton’s earliest settlers. Mr. Eastman graduated from The Gilbert School, class of 1935. In 1945, he joined the Engineering Dept. at Waring Products and retired in 1981 as the National Service Manager after 37 years of service. He was active in community affairs for the Town of Barkhamsted. He was a charter member of the Riverton Volunteer Fire Dept. and served as its’ third Chief. Mr. Eastman was a Trustee and Deacon of The Riverton Congregational Church and Treasurer and President of the Union Agricultural Society (Riverton Fair). Mr. Eastman held a variety of elected and appointed positions for the Town of Barkhamsted. In the 1950’s, he served on the Board of Education, School Building Committee, member of the Board of Assessors, and Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was a Second Selectman for fourteen years and was Chairman of the Republican Town Committee.
