John Lee Longfellow Sr., age 80, of DeMotte, Indiana, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Hospice Franciscan Communities, Crown Point, IN. John was born in Hoopeston, Illinois on December 22, 1935 the son of Elmer and Alma Mae (Jaynes) Longfellow both deceased.
He was a high school graduate and went on to Purdue Calumet where he earned a Bachelor degree in Industrial Supervision. John was employed with US Steel as a safety engineer for 33 years and US Steel Engineers & Consultants for 20 years. He retired in 1991. John married Sandra Jo (King) on August 29, 1980 in Portage, Indiana. He was a veteran of the US Army. John was affiliated with the United Methodist Church of Kniman, and a member of DeMotte United Methodist Church.
He was also a member of DeMotte American Legion Post #440, Masonic Arcadia Lodge # 1138 and a Lifetime member of the American Society of Safety Engineers. John is survived by his loving wife: Sandra Jo; children: Michael (Kim) Longfellow of Chesterton, Lori Ann (George) Wright of Valparaiso, David (Christen) Longfellow of Portage, Jennifer (Ronald) Chapman of Valparaiso; step-children: Darrin (Sandy) Higgins, Gary (Julie) Higgins and Teresa Higgins; 14 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; and sister and brother: Barbara Koufos and Daryl (Wilma) Longfellow. He was preceded in death by his parents, son: John Lee Longfellow Jr; one grandson: Jeremy Wright; siblings: Robert, Louise, Margorie, Mary, and Betty.
