John Talbot (Pappy)

Born April 1, 1921 in Pittsburg, PA. Died March 28, 2017 in Ellicott City, MD.

John served in the US Army 1942-1945. He was trained as a refrigeration mechanic. He spent most of WW11 in the Philippines and New Guinea. His dad passed away while he was overseas. He would never talk much about the horrors of the war, but it was clear he witnessed some.

The family owned and operated Talbot’s Ice Cream store in Altoona, PA.

He married Mary Dumm April 19th 1947. His mom picked her out while he was away fighting the war. He was grateful for his mom’s good taste. They had four sons pretty close together, and one more son 9 years later.

He is survived by John, of VA, Eugene, Thomas, Frederick, and James and two stepdaughters Karen and Nancy all from MD.

He spent his entire career with Hotpoint/General Electric starting out as a repairman and finishing up as the sales rep for the DC area and into Western MD. He was sort of the stereotypical traveling salesman. He would often leave Tuesday morning and not return until Friday. My mom was left to fend for herself with 5 somewhat unruly boys.
He was a volunteer fire fighter, a scout leader, and did a short stint in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a licensed pilot and desperately wanted to have his own airplane. Mary was not having any of that.

Mary passed away in September 1990 from congestive heart failure.
My dad and Nancy’s mom started doing activities with a local senior group about a year later. Irma had been a widow for nearly 13 years.
They ditched the senior group and started dating.
They were married in July of 1992. Irma passed away in September 2012.

Dad suffered from dementia noticeable in about 2005 or so. The disease progressed until the day he passed.

Growing up, dad was a severe man with not much affection shown to us. He mellowed quite a bit in the last ten years. Everyone who met him later in his life thought he was the sweetest man and he was. It was around this time that he became a Christ follower and joined an evangelical charismatic episcopal church. No small step for a staunch Roman Catholic.

He died peacefully sitting in his chair. The attendants had just given him a shower and a fresh change of clothes.

He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, David, Michael, Aaron, Mark, Ellen, Amie, Amanda, and Karen. Additionally, he is survived by ten great grandchildren, Emily, Elizabeth, Jacob, Wesley, Cole, Cameron, Vivienne, Maxwell, Natalie, and Calvin. He was known as Pappy to everyone who knew him.
