John Knott was born on March 8, 1930 to the late Nelson Knott and the late Laurie Hayden Knott. Although reared by the late Wilson Harrison and the late Ruby Harrison, he was a devoted brother, uncle, cousin and friend. A life-long Lisman resident, John was a proud graduate of the Choctaw County Training School’s Class of 1951. Determined to model manhood in the most honorable way, John enlisted in the armed forces proudly serving within the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1959. His passion for learning led him to continue his academic career at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College (Huntsville, Alabama) where he would complete a Bachelor of Science degree in May of 1964 with an emphasis in Industrial Training. He later attended Delta State University (Cleveland, Mississippi) where he completed a Master of Education in August of 1981.

During his matriculation at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, he worked in the President’s office as an assistant to the President. He truly loved his university and would often times tell stories about not only it’s impact on his profession but the life learning experiences he attained during his tenure.

He began his employment career by shaping the lives of the generation behind him, working for over 30 years as the driver safety and education course instructor for the Choctaw County School District. It was in this position that he was able to impact the lives of various students of Choctaw County in ways that he possibly never knew.

In addition to being a family man and lifelong advocate for education, John was highly active in his community. He was a member of multiple community based organizations and most notably a member of Gilfield Baptist Church. A church that John truly felt was home and a church that he proudly served in various capacities. Being a devoted church member, John was part of the men’s choir and the church’s board of trustees.

John truly enjoyed the outdoors and loved any and everything that dealt with hunting. He truly fulfilled his purpose in life. And his many friends and family members, though they may weep awhile, will miss him dearly.

Such were the times of John Knott, who, boasting myriad notable accomplishments and having touched the lives of various people in meaningful ways, came to the end of a life well-lived. John departed this earthly realm on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. He was preceded in death by his fathers Nelson Knott and Wilson Harrison, mothers Laurie Hayden Knott and Ruby Harrison; five brothers: Dan Williams Knott, Lincoln Knott, Marcus Knott, National Knott and Ruel Knott; and four sisters: Katie May Clayton, Emma Lect Harrison, Mary Gay Johnson and Katherine Perkins.

He leaves to cherish fond memories two devoted sister-in-laws: Doretha Knott and the former Jean Knott, both of Akron, OH; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and colleagues.
