Dr. John Karajanis of West Haven passed away at home December 22, 2010. He leaves his beloved wife of 58 years Dorothy DeBridget Karajanis, his loving and devoted children Debra (Paul) Tortora, West Haven Police Chief John (Jill) Karajanis Jr. and Attorney Tony Karajanis and six special and beloved grandchildren Paul Jarod Tortora, Jonathan Robert Tortora, Matthew David Tortora, Carly Rose Karajanis, Tristan Jude Karajanis and Melina Mae Karajanis. He was the brother of Charles Malis, Irene D’Orsi, Christine Schile, Angelina Pappas and the late Tessie Nuzzo, Adelel Malis, Bessie Dill, Mary DiStasio, Helen Haskos, Michael Malis and Harold Malis. Born in New Haven December 5, 1928, son of the late Peter and Catherine Gelogotis Karajanis, he attended Welch, Troup and Hillhouse High School, graduating in 1947. He was a United States Air Force Veteran of the Berlin Air Lift and the Korean War. A graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, Class of 1956 and Wesleyan University, Class of 1959, he pursued advanced graduate studies at Yale University, St. Joseph’s College, University of Connecticut, University of Bridgeport and Walden University. His Ph.D was completed in 1975. Dr. Karajanis served in the West Haven School System for forty-fiveyears in various capacities- as physics teacher, Science Department Chairman, Assistant Principal, Principal of West Haven High School and finally as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He received two National Science Foundation grants to study physics at Yale University. He served as Adjunct Professor of Physics at Southern Connecticut State University for nine years. The West Haven High School Class of 1982 dedicated the Blue Flame yearbook to Dr. Karajanis. In addition, he was a member of CASA, Connecticut Association of Science Administrators and a board member of West Haven Federal Credit Union.
