John Juando Royo, Jr. (Sonny) June 8, 1935 – September 11, 2017. John was born and raised in Highlandtown – Baltimore, Maryland, the son of John Royo Sr. of Barcelona, Spain and Mary (nee Wagowich) Royo. He moved his young family to Howard County, Maryland just a few years before the new town of Columbia was founded. John designed his own home and continued to make improvements himself until his mid 70’s.
John was active in the rifle club at Patterson Park High School in the early 1950’s and then joined the Maryland National Guard in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1961 with the rank of Platoon Sergeant. During and after high school John was an avid dancer and even entered and won a Jitterbug contest in downtown Baltimore with his then girlfriend, Margie (aka Marjorie Westerman), who he married in February of 1956. He attended Johns Hopkins University McCoy College while working at Glenn L. Martin as a Draftsman. When he moved his family to Howard County, Maryland John began working as a Design Engineer with Fairchild Hiller Industries, Bladensburg, then Germantown, Maryland and helped to design spacecraft for the Apollo missions including the LEM that landed on the Moon and the Hubble Space Telescope. John’s signature is even on the Moon as part of the LEM capsule that remains on the Moon, as all of those in the design team added their names to the dashboard. When computer design arrived on the design scene John attended Howard Community College to explore CAD (Computer Aided Design) classes to keep current with the industry standard.
John is survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 61 years Margie, adored daughters Dawne Royo, Tammy Royo Sczepanski and husband Johnnie. John is also survived by his son John Juando Royo, III who has been missing for 17 years and which John had grieved for until the day he died.
