John J. Lane, 92 of Rockville, Maryland passed away peacefully on Monday, July 21, 2014 at his home surrounded by his children and wife, Rosemary of 67 years.

“Papa John” as he was affectionately known was a vibrant, creative and passionate husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  Born in Cascade, Iowa, John was the youngest of six children.  He proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II.  He attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and graduated after the war from University of Tennessee.

John met his beloved wife, Rosemary Maiers (from Holy Cross, Iowa)  in Oak Ridge, Tennessee while they both worked on the Manhattan Project.  John then worked with the Atomic Energy Commission. He was transferred to Rockville, Maryland in 1958 where they have since resided and raised their family.  John and Rosemary have been longstanding parishioners of St. Jude’s Church in Rockville, Maryland.

The consummate good humored Irishman, John lived life to its fullest and was always the life of the party. At the age of 90, he became an honorary member of the Elkridge, Maryland Archangel Motorcycle Club and rode in Rolling Thunder.  He was known for his homemade creative Christmas presents, knock-knock jokes and his unique stain glass creations.

John was extremely loving and proud of his five children: Susan Lane (Dr. Gaf) Chaudry, Bob (and the late Mary) Lane, Tom Lane (deceased), Sara Lane (Mike) Grothe and Joan Lane (Bob)  Duvall.  He was a fun-loving grandfather to Alisha Chaudry (Jack) Slye, Adam Lane Chaudry, Amy Chaudry (James) Storr,  Anthony Chaudry, Alex Chaudry, Christopher Lane, Jonathan (Ashley) Lane, Michael Lane, Briana Lane, John Michael Grothe, Julianne Grothe, Jason Duvall, Ben Duvall, Melissa Duvall and Nate Duvall; and great-grandfather to Samantha and Barrett Slye, Oliver and Jasmine Storr.

Having lost his vision to macular degeneration, one of John’s favorite past times was listening to books on tape.
