John J. Maraio, 71, of Newington, died peacefully, in the comfort of his home on Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, with his loving family at his side. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Longo) Maraio for the past 50 years. Born in Torrington, son of the late John Maraio and Marjorie (LaFar) Maraio Cardone, he was a longtime Newington resident. John was formerly employed by Sussman’s Giant Food, and Stop & Shop. Along with his best friend and business partner Marvin Cormier, he owned and operated Deli Mart of West Hartford, and Video Galaxy Stores in Manchester, New Britain and Newington. He retired from Shaw’s, in Hamden. John was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Newington and was a member of the Canicattiness Society, and especially enjoyed playing Scuba. John and Pat loved vacationing in Florida with their dear friends Donald and Val Guay of Newington and Florida, and their many games of Dominoes. They also enjoyed trips to Italy and Cape Cod and playing Scrabble with their friends Al and Cathy Coco of Newington. He was an avid fan of the NY Yankees and the NY Giants, and always enjoyed watching a good boxing match. A devoted father and grandfather, he leaves his son John Maraio, Jr. and his wife Paula of Middletown; two daughters Denise Maraio and Donna Kagan, both of Newington; and two grandchildren, William Nesbitt and Summer Maraio. He also leaves a brother and sister-in-law Frank and Maryann Maraio of Glastonbury; a sister Debbie Peebles and family of Texas; his brother-in-law Joseph Longo of Newington; and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two sisters, Judy Jackson and Donna Maraio. His family would like to thank Angie and Lester Daigle for being such wonderful neighbors; as well as the hospice staff of Masonicare, and Dr. Mark Dailey and staff at Oncology & Associates for their ongoing care and concern.
