John J. “Jack” Schread, 66, of Cedarburg, WI.., formerly of New Haven, died suddenly July 1, 2011 when he was struck and killed while bicycling on a country road in Muskego, WI. Born in Derby on July 19, 1944, he was the son of the late John C. and Barbara L. Brezinski Schread. He graduated from Notre DameHigh School, West Haven in 1962 and earned his BA degree in English Literature from FairfieldUniversity in 1966. He taught English at Notre Dame, his alma mater, for 38 years, from 1968 to 2006. During his career, he served as chairman of the English Department from 1981 to 1986; golf coach for 16 years; scorekeeper and statistician for sporting events; and toastmaster at Grand Knight Banquets for 12 years. He was National Honor Society moderator for 14 years and sponsor for student trips abroad. He was inducted into Notre Dame Knights of Honor in 1991. Jack was an avid bicyclist, having pedaled 3,000 miles in 2010. With 1,700 on his tires this year, he was well on his way to achieving his goal of 3,500 miles when he was killed. He was an avid golfer, often sporting a tee shirt boasting that he had two holes-in-one. He was a member of both the Ozaukee and Cedarburg Senior golf leagues and an active member of the Lion’s Club. He is survived by his daughter, Johanna Schread of Cedarburg; his sister, Mary Schread Grava and brother in law, William Grava of Livingston, TX.; nephews, nieces and grand nieces, Joshua, Leighanne and Fiorella Grava, all of Ventura, CA.; and Damian, Jacqueline & Iris Grava, all of Redmond, WA.; his partner, Marcia Williams of Franklin, WI.; her children, Alan & Constance; and his friend and former wife of 35 years, Catherine Bode of Cedarburg.
