PLEASANT VALLEY –BOWLER – John J. Bowler of Pleasant Valley, died at home on January 23, 2022 after a long illness. He was 93. The son of John and Mary (Hickson) Bowler, who had come from Ireland and settled in Waterbury, he eventually served as Chaplain of the Connecticut State Ancient Order of Hibernians.After graduating from St. Thomas Seminary, he served in parishes in Meriden, Wethersfield and New Britain. Eventually, he obtained two masters degrees and also studied in Rome. In New Britain, he belonged to various interfaith associations and was a corporater at New Britain General Hospital.In 1976, he assigned to Immaculate Conception Parish in New Hartford where he served for several years and wrote Our First Hundred Years to commemorate the centennial of the parish. In addition, he was Chairman of the Council of Conciliation for due process in the Archdiocese of Hartford. After resigning from the priesthood, he became a social worker for the State of Connecticut.An excellent athlete, he loved tennis and was a champion golfer and former member of the Wethersfield Country Club. He was also an avid reader, especially of theology and Irish history.He is survived by his wife, Mary; his brother, Thomas of New York City; and several nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held at a later date.
