John “Jack” “Poppy” Jorgensen of Sharpsburg, Georgia, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2022, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Jack was raised in Miami, Florida, and lived there until he and his wife Betty moved to Sharpsburg in 2008 to be closer to family. Jack worked for Dade County Public Schools as a pipefitter for 30 years. After retiring from the county, he worked another 15 years in the heating and air industry. Jack was a very proud member of Local 725 of the United Association of Pipefitters, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Union for 68 years.
Jack and Betty enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states as well as Europe. In retirement, Jack stayed busy with many different kinds of projects. He was “Mr. Fix It” and used his talents to “invent” and “improve” everyday items. Jack also enjoyed working in his yard and feeding the birds who frequented his yard. Jack was well known for his nap taking abilities-he could nap anytime, anywhere, while holding a newspaper or even a cup of coffee. Once his grandchildren were born, Jack became Poppy to everyone.
Jack was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Betty. His is survived by his daughters Carolyn Bell (Mike) and Wendy LaRotonda (Jeff), his son, John Jorgensen, Jr. (Nancy), grandchildren Alyson Merritt (Tadd), Logan Bell (Lindsey), Michele LaRotonda, Kevin Bell (Savana), and Johnny Jorgensen (Michele), great-grandchildren Olivia and Connor Merritt, Joshua Jorgensen, and brother-in-law Arthur Anderson, Jr.
