John Ervin Skinner

May 14, 1925  –  July 1, 2014

John E. Skinner, 89, of Edgemont, Arkansas, went home to be with Jesus, his Savior, Tuesday, July 1, 2014. He was born in Vineyard (Lee County), Arkansas on May 14, 1925, son of James Ervin and Lena Lee Skinner.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 until he was honorably discharged, and we honor him as a veteran of World War II.

Upon returning home from the military, he married Mabel L. Scott in 1946, and together they had two daughters: Linda Sue born in 1948 and Reva Jean born in 1949, who sadly passed away as an eight month old infant in 1950.

He moved his family to Kenosha, Wisconsin around 1951. There he worked and resided until his retirement from American Motors, at which time he moved back to Arkansas where he loved being.

John was a hard working man, who had a lively, loving, endearing and witty personality. He loved people, loved life, and had a smile for almost everyone. He was a caring and generous man who would give the shirt off of his back if it was needed. He enjoyed spinning a good tale and loved playing his guitar and singing, both alone and with neighborhood bands. He especially enjoyed gospel and country music, often writing his own songs.

He loved children, and spending time with his family gave him his greatest joy. He was known as the most terrific “Poppie” by the generations of grands he so loved.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel; daughter, Linda (Ron) Goergen of Edgemont, Arkansas; two granddaughters: Lisa (Bob) Langermann of Kenosha, Wisconsin and Kimberly Matalas of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; and grandson, Gregory (Shelia) Goergen of Advance, Missouri. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Melissa Patty, Leah Langermann, Jennifer Moenssen, Jorrele Rivera, Garret Rivera, Joriana Rivera, Zachary Goergen, and Jeremiah Goergen; and four great-great-grandchildren: Sarayla and Kiara Lugo, Phoenix Mitchell, and Nathanel Langerman.

John was preceded in death by a daughter, Reva Jean Skinner; his parents; five brothers; and one sister.
