John McGrath, 79, of Ottawa, died early Thursday morning, December 8, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family.
John was born November 3, 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts to John Bernard and Madeline (Areson) McGrath. He graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1951 and later received his B.A. degree from Michigan State University in 1956. He served in the Army from 1956 to 1959. He married Margaret ”Peggy” Broughton on May 14, 1960 in St. Elizabeth Church in Wyandotte, Michigan. He was the former owner of Insurance and Investment Planning in Ottawa.
He was a member of St. Columba Church, Kiwanis, Independent Insurance Association, Knights of Columbus and Psi Upsilon Fraternity. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; four children, John (Christine) McGrath of Winnetka, Katherine “K.C.” (Dan) Wollenberg of Lemont, Peter (Mary) McGrath and Daniel (Tricia) McGrath both of Ottawa; twelve grandchildren, Daniel, Gavin and Luke Wollenberg, Samuel, Benedict, Patrick, Henry, Lucy, Peter, Charles, Sofia and Anna McGrath; a brother, Robert (Christine) McGrath of Inverness; and a sister, Barbara Logan of Pompano Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jane Crossley; a brother, Peter McGrath and a nephew, Brian McGrath.
