John “Doc” William Sorenson, 70, of Salem passed away on September 27, 2016 at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.
Doc was born February 27, 1946, in Keokuk, Iowa, the only child to the late John D. and Mildred C. Howell Sorenson. He was a disabled veteran with the United States Army and also served in the United States Air Force. Doc served as an Army Medic with the Special Forces during his three tours of duty in the Vietnam War, earning three Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. Later, Doc was the Commander and Chief of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 5191, Salem, WV.
He is survived by his second wife, Chong Yasuda of Hawaii; and his only child, a daughter, Christina Baguio and husband Robert “Bob” of Kaneohe, Hawaii; Three grandchildren, Joshua Sorenson, Justin and Jenny Chung all of Kaneohe, Hawaii; one step-brother Randal E. Rheinhardt of Salem, WV.
Doc was a Crow Indian and very faithful to his Native American heritage in practice and in supporting the rights of Native American’s. Doc was a very giving man, giving to his country, his heritage and unto his end by being an organ donor. He enjoyed NASCAR Racing and Steelers Football. He was loved by all who knew him, especially by his beloved daughter who will forever refer to him as “MY DADDY.
