John Dickey, 71, of Galien, Michigan, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Indiana. John was born to Albert and Vlasta “Flossie” (Ludvik) Dickey at the family’s farm in Galien on March 24, 1936.
After he graduated from Galien High School in 1954, John served his country in the U.S. Army. On June 13, 1959 he married Arlene Sestak at the Olive Branch Church in Galien.
He was employed as a teletype operator for the South Bend Tribune, retiring after 34 years. John was a dedicated lifetime member of the Olive Branch United Methodist Church. He was co-treasurer with his wife Arlene of both the Galien United Methodist Church and Olive Branch Church for 15 years. John loved his family, home, and church dearly; he was an avid Detroit Lions fan and was interested in researching his family’s ancestry and genealogy. He loved the time spent on cruise vacations with his wife, enjoyed watching his granddaughter perform on stage, and attending his grandsons’ sports activities.
John also enjoyed puttering on the farm and looked forward to having the whole family together for dinner once a month. Survivors include his wife, Arlene; children, Brian (Robyn) Dickey and Brenda Menhart, both of Buchanan, Michigan; grandchildren, Sarah Dickey, Jonathan (Melissa) Dickey, Joshua Dickey and Paul Michael Menhart; great granddaughters, Madison Dickey and Danika Dickey; sisters, Frances (Robert) Stanage, Stevensville, Michigan and Beatrice Rudlaff of St. Joseph, Michigan.
