John C. Schaeffer, age 82 of Westminster

John C. Schaeffer, age 82 of Westminster, died Sunday October 31, 2010 at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson, MD. He was born September 21, 1928 in Silver Run, the son of the late William E. and Mary K. Bankert Schaeffer. He was the husband of Evelyn Armacost Schaeffer, his wife of 61 years.

He was a life long member of St. Mary’s United Church of Christ in Silver Run, Maryland. He served as superintendent and taught Sunday School for 30 years. In addition he served many times on the Church Consistory Board.

John was a graduate of Westminster High School, Class of 1945 and Western Maryland College, Class of 1949.

Mr. Schaeffer had a 50 year career in banking. He began as a teller at the Union Mills Savings Bank, which later merged to become Westminster Bank and Trust Company. As President in 1969, he was the youngest to hold that position at that time in the State of Maryland. It was during his tenure that the bank became affiliated with Mercantile Bankshares Corporation. He then served as chairman of the board; retired from active management in 1990 and remained on the board until 1999.

His civic activities included membership in the Kiwanis Club of Westminster, serving as president in 1964 and received the Hixon Award; Board member of the original Industrial Development Authority; Board member and treasurer of the Union Mills Homestead Foundation; Vice Chairman of the Carroll County Chapter of the American Red Cross; former member of the Community Foundation of Carroll County; and the Historical Society of Carroll County.

Surviving in addition to his wife are children Monte A. Schaeffer and wife Deborah Day Schaeffer of Westminster, J. Craig Schaeffer and wife Margie Holweck Schaeffer of Blue Ridge Summit, PA, Lou Ann Schaeffer of Warner Robins, Georgia; grandchildren Calvin L. Schaeffer, Samuel E. Schaeffer, Emily K. Thompson and John David Thompson.

He was predeceased by a brother, William E. Schaeffer, Jr., daughter-in-law, Denise Murdock Schaeffer, and by a grandson, Keith A. Schaeffer.
