John B. Chipman III, 76 of rural Chandlerville, IL died Friday evening, October 21, 2016, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

He was born August 20, 1940 in Union City, TN, the son of John Brainerd Jr. and M. Madge Barner Chipman. He married Mary Ellen Marcy on June 26, 1963 in Chandlerville and she survives.

He is survived by three children, Marcy Savage (husband, Troy) of Springfield, Lucy Earhart (husband, David) of Chatham, and John “Chip” Chipman (wife, Amy) of Savoy; eight grandchildren, Trevor Savage (fiancé, Renna), Maddie Savage, Nick Savage, Holly Earhart (fiance, Cody), Haley Earhart, Abby Chipman, Emily Chipman and Brooklyn Chipman;  a sister, Nancy Strickland of Nashville, TN; numerous nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, Mac. He was preceded in death by his parents.

John was a 1958 graduate of Chandlerville High School and a 1962 graduate of MacMurray College. He served as a captain with the US Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1963-1967. He was an accountant for Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville for many years and later established the H & R Block tax preparation franchise in Jacksonville. He owned and operated the Chipman Insurance Agency in Chandlerville until his retirement.

In his spare time, he raised livestock at his rural farm home. He was a long-time member of the Sangamon Valley Presbyterian Church in rural Virginia, Chandlerville American Legion Post 694, and the Chandlerville Masonic Lodge. He formerly served as a member of the Chandlerville School Board and was a founding director of the Peoples State Bank in Chandlerville. An avid outdoors man, John loved hunting, fishing, and gardening. He enjoyed travel, reading, and attending his grandchildren’s activities. In later years, he became passionate about collecting antiques at auctions and garage sales.
