WATERBURY – Mr. John A. Turzo, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014 in the Vitas Innovative Hospice Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was the devoted husband of the late Elaine Turzo who passed away just 4 months earlier.
John was born June 18, 1932 in Waterbury, the son of the late Peter and Mary (Sgrillo) Turzo. John is survived by his daughter, Deborah Dellevalle and her husband David of Waterbury. Grandsons, Dr. Jason Rizza and his wife Melissa and Great Granddaughter Brooklyn, of Waterbury, and SSGT. Mark Rizza, U.S.A.F. and Great Grandson, Jordan of New Jersey. He also leaves a brother, Richard and his wife Roseann of Torrington, CT., two sisters, Sanita Labonte of Southington, CT, and Angela Polci and her husband Albert of Prospect, CT. As well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Turzo of Florida.
John graduated from Leavenworth High School, and was a proud US Navy veteran having served on the USS Corry (DD-817) during the Korean War.
John retired as District Manager of Wonder Bread. He also previously worked for Milite’s Bakery, Iava’s Bakery, Cassone’s Bakery, and Genoa Salami Products of Newton, MA.
He was a former member of The Meadow Social Club having played many “Morra” games with the guys, and also played softball in the Town Plot League. He was also a member of the American Legion.
John devoted his life to his wife and his family. He was instrumental in the guidance and support to both of his grandsons whom he was very proud of. He was an avid New York Yankee fan and excelled in Golf and Bowling as well as all other sports.
