John “Gus” Alusik, from Colonia, NJ. died Wednesday January 31, 2018.  He was 96.

Born in Ashley, PA., he moved to Elizabeth after graduation where he began an apprenticeship in the Floor Covering trade at the Floor Shop.  He tested his baseball skills in 1942 and 1946 playing for Wilson, NC in the Coastal Plain League.  In between the baseball years as a Sergeant in the Field Artillery, he actually participated in many engagements in France and Germany during WWII.

After his baseball years, he returned to the Floor Shop where he developed the ability to become a skilled installer of linoleum, vinyl tiles and carpeting.  While working at the Floor Shop, he attended Newark State College (now Kean University) where he obtained BA in Education and a MA in Administration and Supervision.

He obtained a position in the East Brunswick School District as a Science teacher for the next 24 years.  While at East Brunswick, he had a book published entitled “Illustrated handbook of General Science Teaching Aids” that he used to help his students understand the basick concepts he taught in his classes.

He accepted an Adjunct Professor’s position as an instructor at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City where he conducted classes on Saturdays during the winter trimester for the next 26 years.

He moved to Colonia in 1952 where he was active in coaching baseball from eight-year-olds to the American Legion Team that was a state finalist.  He was active in the Union County League where he twice won the batting title with averages over 400.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Ann, his brothers Steve, Mike and Andrew and his wife Helen.  He is survived by his brothers Joe from Port Reading and George from Woodbridge; his sons John Jr. and wife Judy from Edison and William and his wife Carol from Manalapan; and his five grandchildren Chris, Kaitlin, Stephanie, Juliana and Jillian.
