John Allen Amos, (Jack) of Lafayette, IN, passed away December 24, 2021, in The IU Arnett Hospital Lafayette due to Pneumonia/Covid Complications.
Born January 24, 1937, to the late Helen Marie (Butz) Amos and Paul E. Amos of Lafayette.
John was a graduate of Jefferson High School, class of 1955, where he received a certificate in recognition for perfect attendance. He attended Purdue University-for two years. He served in the United States Army for four years, two of those years he was stationed at Redstone Missile at Neckarsulm, Germany. He was employed by Commercial Printing Company for 31 years and went on to work at Purdue Printing Services for another 17 ½ years, retiring in April 2005. As a youth he delivered the Journal and Courier in the eighth grade through high school. In 1989, he started delivering the Journal and Courier again for another 17 ½ years.
After retirement from Purdue Printing Services, he worked part time in printing services for Larry Kappas in Flora, IN. John enjoyed mowing yards and owned his own mowing business known as the “Grass Goat” for thirteen years. John was an avid bowler with the Senior Bowling league at Arrowhead Bowl, recognized by his translucent red bowling ball,
John treasured the time he spent in reading and studying the Bible. He helped to start the “Men’s Bible Study Fellowship International” in Lafayette, IN and was a past leader and member of this group. John was a Sunday School Teacher of Youth for many years at Hope Chapel Presbyterian Church and at The Federated Church of West Lafayette, IN. John was a part of the Kairos Ministry at the Westville Correctional Facility Indiana. John was a member of The Federated Church of West Lafayette, IN.
John never knew a stranger, he loved to make everyone around him laugh with his silly jokes and funny faces. If you asked him what his name was, he would tease and answer “Harry Von Goonstlen Horsenblossomthistlebloom” some would end up calling him “Harry”. He was a cruciverbalist!
He married Barbara A. Mourning, May 5, 1960, who survives along with daughter, Vicki A. Pearl (husband, Jim). Grandchildren, Paige A. Britton (Tyler), Noah C. Amos (girlfriend Jordan Kenyon) and Emma R. Amos. Great granddaughter, Lainey Rose Amos. Survived by one brother, Donald E. Amos of Albuquerque, N.M, three nephews and one niece. Also survived by brother-in-law, William (Bill) Mourning, wife Jenny of largo, Fl. Was known as “Grandpa Amos” to all the “Pearl Clan”.
Preceded in death by his parents, Son, Christopher A. Amos (2011), brother, Richard G. Amos (2008).
The family would like to thank the IU Doctors and Nurses in the ICU for the care they provided to John.
