John Alfred “Johnny” Needs, 86, of Caldwell, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2011, at a Nampa care center of natural causes.

John was born in Henry, Nebraska on June 12, 1925, one of eleven children born to Charles F. and Rosa Hussfeldt Needs.  They lived on a farm near Morrill, Nebraska, until 1936 when they moved to Idaho and settled in the Caldwell area.  John attended Van Buren Elementary and Caldwell High School.

In 1942 John met Jean Mumford and they married on March 11, 1944.  Their son Rick was born on January 26, 1954.  John and Jean lived their entire married life in Caldwell.  John retired in 1986 from Sears after 35 years.

John enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was younger.  He also enjoyed horseback riding. He belonged to the Caldwell Riding Club for many years.  During those years, a group of eight couples square-danced on horseback, and they performed at several rodeo’s around the valley.  John also liked to travel and he and Jean took many tours of the states, Canada and Mexico.

In 1971 John built a cabin on Clear Creek near Cascade and the family had many fun times at the cabin.

After retirement, a group of his classmates and their spouses formed the Friday lunch group and they became an important part of John and Jean’s lives.  John was also a member of the Elks Lodge.

John is survived by his wife, Jean; son, Rick, and his wife, Cynthia; great grandchildren, Alexandria (Zack) Barker, and Amber,  Jayde and Jacob Thompson; 3 great great grandchildren; and a sister, Juanita of Sacramento, CA.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Jean Thompson; his parents; brothers, Vernon, George, Fred, and Orville; and sisters, Marguerite, Marie, Omedia  and Ruby.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the care givers who cared for John in his last days.
