John Alexander Urquhart (Jack) of Fairfield lost his long battle with cancer on Friday, August 22, 2014. He died peacefully at home, aged 86, surrounded by his family. Jack was born in Savannah, Georgia, the son of the late George and Helen Urquhart. He received an engineering degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and served in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean conflict. He was a retired officer of the General Electric Company, where his career spanned 41 years. In the decade before his retirement, he served as Executive Vice President of both the International and Power Systems Sectors. Following retirement, he ran John A. Urquhart Associates, a consulting business focusing on the energy and utility industries. He was on the Board of Trustees of The American University of Cairo, and served on the British North American Committee, the U.S. Council for Energy Awareness and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Industry Advisory Board. He also served on the Boards of Directors of the Hubbell Corporation, Catalytica Energy Systems Inc., Aquarion and the Weir Group, to name a few. Jack is survived by his wife Mary Anne, daughter Jane Urquhart Lowe, son John Alexander Urquhart, Jr., seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
