John was born on the island of Andros in Greece on August 15, 1922, He entered the Greek merchant marine at the age of 16. Then later when World War II broke out he fought in the Greek Navy. He survived three different torpedo attacks, including one in which he tread shark infested waters for over four hours. He then finished the war fighting alongside the British Royal Navy as a Sonar Operator. After the war he emigrated to the United States where he was a waiter in New York City until a family friend called him up and invited him to come work at the Burlington Diner, where he lived the American Dream, becoming an owner in less than ten years. There he met his wife Katherine. They married in 1949 and remained happily married for 42 years, until her passing in 1992. In that time, they had three children. He was known to his many customers and friends for his kindness and generosity. He loved his family and could often be found with at least one of his grandchildren by his side.

A wonderful dancer, he was known for his love of a great party, a good poker game, and he was always up for a trip to the boardwalk. John was predeceased by his wife Katherine (nee Cocordas) and his brother George. He is survived by his children: Marsha Liviakis (Antonios); Anthony Stratis (Olga); and Chris Stratis (Margo). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Christina Gianopulos (Peter); Caterina Liviakis; John A. and Maria Stratis; John C., Nicholas C., and Katherine Stratis. He is also survived by his great-grandson, Nicholas S. Gianopulos. He is also survived by his brother, Panagiotis Stratis in Greece, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Friends and family may pay their respects on Sunday, June 12th, 7.00pm- 9.00pm at PAGE FUNERAL HOME (302 East Union Street, Burlington, NJ 08016).
