John A. Knudsen, 76 of Lakeside, Michigan and Illinois, died peacefully at Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville, Michigan on Thursday morning, March 13, 2014. John was born February 3, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York to Arthur and Edith (Iversen) Knudsen. His love of the arts lead him on a lifetime of creating, teaching and collecting beautiful things.

John earned his Master of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Iowa. He was a Professor of Art at the William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois for 30 years. He was also a member of the Chicago Rug Society. John was a purveyor of art and was the owner of the John A. Knudsen Workshop and Gallery in Union Pier. John and his wife loved to travel and enjoyed collecting rugs and antiques to add to their personal collection.John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Karen (nee: Davies) Knudsen, they were married on July 31, 1960 in Cresco, Iowa and maintained a cottage in Lakeside for 20 years.

Survivors also include his children, Michael David (Mercedes) Knudsen of Palatine, and Anne Elizabeth Knudsen of Schererville, Indiana; grandchildren, Daniel and Elena; sisters, Mary Schwary of Vancouver, Washington and Ruth (Richard) Prescott of River Forest, Illinois and brothers, Philip (Karen) Knudsen of Harvard, Illinois and Andrew (Sue) Knudsen of Libertyville, Illinois. His brother, David, preceded him in death.
