John Austin Griffin, 83, of Jacksonville passed away at Heritage Health on December 5, 2020, and went to live with our Lord in Heaven.

He was born February 15, 1937, at home in Chapin, IL, the son of Austin J. and Mildred Hymes Griffin.

John married Linda Hamey Griffin of Jacksonville on June 23, 1963, in Jacksonville.  He is survived by two sons, John David of San Anselmo, CA; Darren M. Griffin of Sarasota, FL; one daughter, Dawn M. Griffin Rourke (John) of Portland, OR; and one sister, Mary (Chuck) Hankins of Jacksonville.  Also surviving are three grandchildren, Faris Griffin and Zianah Griffin of San Anselmo, CA, and Colin Whitcombe of Sarasota, FL.   John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Griffin.

Mr. Griffin attended Chapin High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959. He worked at IL-MO Welding Products for 35 years, retiring in 1999.  He was a member of the First Christian Church of Jacksonville, participating in many areas and functions of the church over the years.  He enjoyed walking for exercise at the church and helping others in any way he could.  He also enjoyed ringing the bells for the Salvation Army each year at Christmas and volunteering at the Jacksonville Food Bank.

John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family and being with his grandchildren.  John and Linda enjoyed traveling for many years, both in the U.S. and abroad.  John was friendly, kind, loving, honest, and selfless and had a delightfully dry sense of humor. He enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be missed by all.
